HIFU for Prostate Cancer Treatment

HIFU is an acronym for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, an innovative technology used to treat a variety of conditions using the power of ultrasound waves to target and destroy tissue deep within the body. One common use of HIFU is the treatment of prostate cancer and BPH. Because the technology allows for pinpoint accuracy, it is ideal for treating prostatic conditions while minimizing potential damage to surrounding organs and tissue.

During a HIFU procedure, the ultrasound waves are sent to a targeted area, where they heat the tissue quickly, effectively destroying the tissue. The procedure lasts between one and four hours and typically does not need to be repeated, although it can be repeated without any residual side effects. Because HIFU is non-ionizing, doctors can use it to treat prostate cancer when other common treatments have failed.
